When I was Six, I Had a Birthday Party. *smug*
When I was in Kindergarten, I noticed that whenever it was any of my classmate’s birthday, Mrs Mary Lim the class teacher would gift the very special birthday child with a very special treat – a boiled egg for recess.
When my birthday was due in three days, I started worrying. This will be my one chance in a year to receive a boiled egg from Mrs Mary Lim and if it went by without her noticing, it will be too late. After a long time deliberating, I decided that I must pluck up my courage and remind her about it.
It took me all day and finally, on the bus ride home, I sidled into the seat next to hers. With my head bowed and my voice low, I whispered, “Cheecher, my berfday is on Fwyday.”
Well, “Cheecher” was very pleased to hear it. She broke into a wide smile and then, she said, “Awww, you are inviting me to your birthday party! Of course I will come. What time is it?”
Huh?! My eyes widened in horror. There wasn’t any birthday party and that was not supposed to be an invitation! All I wanted was to make sure I receive a boiled egg from Mrs Mary Lim on September 13th 1985.
I said, “Uh, ah, must ask my mother,” and went back to my seat.
Back home, I said to Mother that Teacher is coming on Friday for *drumroll please* my birthday party! She was shocked and aghast. After a long lecture on not inviting guests for non-existent birthday parties, she said she will fry some noodles, bake some chicken wings, boil some eggs, buy a cake and invite the neighbor’s kids. She also said to tell teacher to come at 5:30.
“Cheecher” came on Friday with a box of color pencils as a gift.

I was very pleased.

Although, my brother’s eyes were close to watering. :P
PS: I distinctly remember these photos to be from my sixth birthday party even though there are only three candles on the cake. Perhaps we had the exact same food and guests for my third birthday party or perhaps the baker ran out of candles. *shrug*
Mrs Mary Lim is now the principal of Christ Church Kindergarten. She taught me phonics.

Don’t make me sweat. C’mon, don’t tell me you didn’t have a bowl haircut when you were a kid?
Did you get the egg?
No I didn’t which is why I have an inner urge to raise chickens for eggs right about now. Tsk tsk teachers. ;)
Heheh so cute. So from a non-existent party, you had a big one! Look at the number of kids who came. Funny story.
That’s so cute! =) Yeah, whatever happened to the egg?
