What’s wrong with Lin Miaoke lip-synching to Yang Peiyi’s singing?

The organizers decided Yang Pei Yi wasn’t pretty enough to be singing in front of the whole world for the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony.

So they got little Lin Miao Ke to lip-sync to Yang Pei Yi’s voice instead. To be honest, I didn’t see anything wrong with it until I found out how it happened.

Had the organizers said to Pei Yi,

“You have a beautiful voice, would you mind singing Ode to the Motherland for the opening ceremony?”

It would have been natural. But this wasn’t what happened.

Instead, they saw Pei Yi on stage and told her,

“Would you mind if we substitute your face with Lin Miao Ke’s? She has much better stage presence.”

Ouch!

Now that it has been said and done, what is most important is how Pei Yi took it.

Amazingly, Pei Yi could have seen it as a rejection and wallow in the hurt but she didn’t. Instead, Pei Yi thinks it is such an honor that they are using her singing for the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony at all.

What a humble little girl! I like her attitude! I have no doubt she will grow up to be a healthy and beautiful woman. :)

It would be so hurtful to her pride and self-esteem but it’s good she’s taking it positively.

Nothing wrong at all. This thing happens a lot in artistic work and entertainment industry. So happen it does not go well with many people’s political correctness. People need more education in arts.

It happens every day in the advertising industry. So why can’t it happen in the Olympics?

The host country invests tons of $$$ to host the games in exchange for a chance to advertise themselves. I think it’s only fair.

the bottom line is the Olympics ISN’T advertising. I came across this comment on yahoo answers and I think this person couldn’t be more right:

“The Olympics is not Hollywood, it is not suppose to present an image perfect China, it is suppose to introduce the world to the real people, history and achievements of China. Sure you can disregard some negative aspects (like they did with last 50 years from the opening ceremony) but replacing the little girl was completely pointless. Yang Peiyi was not ugly, she was cute and the closer embodiment of the Olympics spirit because she was chosen for her talent. She is the face of the millions of average Chinese children and they should take pride in themselves no matter what they look like.”

Wow, that’s a great reply, but I honestly doubt China or any other countries will care to host the Olympics if it isn’t for a chance to advertise their country.

What’s wrong is that it isn’t fair to both girls. No matter how they feel about it, both would want to participate in any capacity so they don’t have much of a choice other than to take it in their stride.

    The adults were callous.

Nothing wrong? Try lip synching to someone else’s voice or singning unseen for a performer who is occupying your rightful place.

They are beautiful children with wonderful voices. Just any one of them will do.

I think lip-syncing to someone else’s voice is generally commonly accepted. That’s why the word “lip-sync” exists, we needed a term to describe the activity.

As for whether it is right or wrong, it’s just like how thousands of scientists and engineers work hard behind the scene to create a revolutionary beauty product, but we never get them give them any credit. It’s the salesgirl who touts the product in Watson’s Pharmacy who gets associated with the product.
