The story of two chocolate-brown puppies who came to my house

The animal kingdom is not a republic. Kylie the labrador and Charise the dutch shepherd never voted to elect Dino as their king. He is their king because he is the most powerful of them all.

Years ago, I had only one dog and it was the king of the tiny animal kingdom around our house. Snoopy is a mix-breed that a neighbor gave to us. We poured all our affection upon this feisty dog.

One day, two chocolate-brown puppies came to the gates of our house. They must be siblings from the same stray litter. When Mum was hanging out the clothes, they yelped at her. She looked at them and they quickly sat on their behinds like the most well-behaved little dogs.

Mum tried to tell them that we were not adopting any more dogs. The housekeeper carried them away in her bicycle. Guess what? The next morning, the cute puppies were back at our gates. They yelped at us with their pink tongues lolling out.

Mum picked them up, threw them into the car and drove away. They were left beside the big road near our house.

What do you know? The next day, the two skinny puppies were back again, grinning at us from between the grills.

This time, Mum relented and opened the gates. They bounded in as though this is the happiest day of their lives! They were so happy, they bounded and ran and sniffed and bounded and ran. :)

Snoopy the King hated them though. Snoopy raised the hair on his back and growled at them to get out. Instead, the puppies adopted the habit of following Snoopy around like how ducklings follow a mother duck. Snoopy was so annoyed that he couldn’t shake them off. Every few steps that he went, he would turn around and growl. Instead of leaving him alone, they looked at him with the purest love in their eyes, lol!

Snoopy really couldn’t stand having the rascals around. In the end, we opened the gates and put them back out.

They lazed outside the gates as though they were just there to sunbathe for awhile. I guess they will be making the gates their permanent house.

In the afternoon, while I was taking a nap, I heard the sound of a gunshot. I perked my ear up to listen. Another shot was fired from down the street.

I threw off my blanket, jumped off my bed and flew down the stairs. Just three steps before I got to the gates, two gunshots rang out right next to each other from right in front of my house.

I never saw two dead puppies being picked up and thrown into a sack. All I saw was smoke rising up.

Footnote: This story is completely true. In Malaysia, stray dogs are eliminated this way.

OMG! Poor little puppies… People can be so cruel to little animals…

It was a horrible experience. We should have known though. This is the inevitable when you put dogs away, whether in the dog pound (SPCA) or outside your gates.

    Gah!

It is even sadder to be there. It happened so many years ago when I was still in high school. I have never forgotten them and how cute they were. I feel very angry with the way stray dogs are eliminated but I also acknowledge that it is our own fault for not wanting them around.

    Sigh
