The Intensity of a Pro Football Player

I’ve seen glimpses of football games before. I’ve eaten in Mamaks that broadcast live games via Astro. I’ve seen flickers of it on my home’s TV screen whenever my brother watch. I’ve even stayed up for the World Cup when I was 15 years old!

But it was only a few weeks ago that I got to know football as more than just a *roll-your-eyes* game on TV. A friend invited us to watch the Singapore vs Thailand game at the stadium and for the first time, I saw how WIDE and FAR the football field goes. Wow! I never knew it requires SO MUCH SWEAT just to run around to try to kick the ball, and that even if you put in all that effort, you may not get to kick the ball even once if you’re not a skilled player.

Following that, I watched this video on YouTube that highlights the top 10 football goals scored around the world this year. These goals have been nominated for the 2009 FIFA Puskas Award.

Again, I was floored. I was taken aback by how focused these 10 players are on scoring goals -- so much so that even when they have tripped over someone’s legs and are flying through the air and are about to fall, they would give their all to lift one leg up for a vigorous last-ditch kick at the ball. And as can be seen in this video, these dying attempts can bear good results.

We certainly don’t need to be football players to have such an intense level of focus on a goal.

What I mean is, speaking for myself, had I been coming down with the flu, I would have taken the day off to rest in bed with a steaming mug of Milo on my bedside (true story, perhaps). But these footballers, had they been coming down with the flu, they would probably have gathered all their remaining energy to perform a final, hard-hitting kick at the ball to get it into the goal.

Their attitude helps me see how far back I am seated and the awareness made me very eager to get to the front where I can be close to the ball. What awesome examples these humans are!
