BMW’s April Fools’ Advertisement

Last night, I learned (from watching a chick flick) that one doesn’t eat caviar with a silver fork. The oxidation will impart a metallic taste to the fish roe. Instead, one puts it on top of the wrist and lick it off.

If the BMW brand were a person, I’d expect him say he already knew that. The BMW has always come across as rather formal. That is why I didn’t expect BMW to play such a wicked April Fools’ joke on its customers. This is the copy of BMW UK’s advertisement on April 1st,

Headline: Introducing Canine Repellent Alloy Protection

Body Copy: From the shark fin aerial to the aerodynamic wheels, a BMW is as pleasing to look at as it is to drive. And thanks to our Canine Repellent Alloy Protection system, it’s designed to stay that way long after leaving the forecourt. The brainchild of Dr Hans Zoff, head of automotive security, it prevents any dog from relieving itself on the car by administering an immediate and relatively pain-free, electric shock. But the real surprise is that the 220 volts this requires come courtesty of our Brake Energy Regeneration system. This converts energy created under braking into an electrical charge known as Rim Impulse Power (R.I.P.) and stores it ready for the next encounter. And there you have it. Beauty through engineering perfection - our philosophy, in a wheel nut. If you would like to learn more about Canine Repellent Alloy Protection, please call 0800 777 129.

Congratulations BMW. We enjoyed your stuffed shirt humor.
