Kylie – our dear old granny labrador

I’ve said a lot about Kylie before but I hardly ever say nice things about our ninety-year-old gal. I have complained that Kylie is the most disgusting dog in the world because the moment I try to get out of the house, she will attempt to wipe her mucous eye discharge against my dress pants or skirt. I don’t appreciate her ‘loving’ gestures and have held it against her. But recently, I’ve come to realize that even dogs with bad habits are sometimes good too.

The other day, I had four juicy bones for the dogs. I placed one on the palm of my hand and offered it to Flame, the Cocker Spaniel. Flame greedily bit it off my hand, nipping my fingers lightly as she did. I placed another one on my palm and offered it to Charise, the Dutch Shepherd. Charise nimbly and accurately picked it up with her teeth. I gave one to Dino who Dino clumsily took ate it. Last of all, I held one out for Kylie.

Kylie came forward for her turn, looked at me tenderly in the eyes, and smiled a sweet, grateful smile. Then, she lopped her big floppy tongue over my palm and walah, have picked up the bone with her tongue. I was surprised that she used her soft, pink tongue instead of teeth and jaws to pick it up. That was a deliberate, patient and kind way to pick up her bone from my hand.

So you see, Kylie is the sweetest dog in the world. I shall never complain about her again. The old lady is happiest when you scratch the top of her head and that’s what I enjoy doing for her as well.
