This Precious Life

It’s been five days since Kero went missing. Everything have come to a standstill.

I used to shake my head that the neighbors are too lazy to dispose the leftovers of their KFC after eating them in public. I would never have allowed Kero to poke her nose into these but now, I feel relieved when I see these piles of food. At least I know Kero won’t be starving.

Every time I turn a corner, my heart will start thumping – she might be here, just around the corner; but each time, she wasn’t. Every time I glimpse a furry bundle, my heart will start thumping. But it always turns out to be a cute little stray cat and not Kero.

Lots of people have said she must have been kidnapped by a kind family who really wanted a pretty dog to love and care for. On the other hand, strangers on the street kept spotting Kero and were even able to give detailed descriptions of her. Last night, she was spotted at least six times between 7:30pm to 8:30pm in one area.

Stories we have heard,

“She was crouching in a corner outside MacDonald’s, it was raining and she was drenched and shivering,”

“She was crossing the road, you can tell she was confused and panicking,”

“She was sleeping on this table, I tried to poke her but she was too fast for me. She took off immediately,”

“I squatted down and tempted her with bak kwa and bread, she came towards me and stared at me curiously. But when she realizes that she doesn’t know me, she dashed into the opposite direction,”

“She was running towards there. She can run very fast arh,”

“Ada. Ar… ar… Yesterday… Ar… ar… (points to the next block.)”

Every day after the boyf and I have combed every place where we think she might be found, we will stand and stare into space. Sometimes I will break the silence with a joke e.g. about the big rotan (rod) I will buy to whack her bottom after we’ve found her; or that she must have mistakenly thought she heard a trumpet call and ran in that direction to witness the return of her King.

Kero, Kero. Only God knows where she is now.

Update I: There is a rainstorm right now with thunders and lightnings, and the boyf is out there, still searching.

Update II: A security guard at a nearby school spotted her sleeping near a drain. She must have been exhausted from all that running. She’s scared of strangers, you see.

Update III: A neighbour spotted a dog in terrible condition – it was listless, unable to respond and suffering from bad skin disease. He had called SPCA to pick it up. We were able to confirm that it’s not Kero.
