Is it Safe to Cycle at East Coast Park?

Dear Mum,

I know you are worried whenever I cycle at East Coast Park.

Thanks for caring Mum, but see? East Coast Park is bright as day with lots of people around - camping, barbecuing, cycling, skating, jogging, dating.

I pedal on the smooth cycling track along the beach. The cold sea breeze and the waves crashing to shore gives me a sense of freedom and rhythm.

The end of the cycling track is a little quiet, but I’m here for only a few seconds before turning back.

There is absolutely nothing to worry about.

I Cycled from East Coast Park to Bedok Town and Think I’m Still Alive

Last weekend, I wanted to cycle at East Coast Park but Nic said it’s too dangerous to get there by bike while Lennie said I’ll never be able to finish all 20km. Hm!

Then, Nic offered to cycle the bicycle there for me while I drive there with Kero Khoo. What a sweet surprise.

We met at Bedok Jetty where Nic & Kero acted like long lost lovers. They went off to McCafe, I went off to Changi Beach.

This weekend, I wanted to cycle at East Coast Park again. Nic dropped me and the bicycle off at one end of ECP, I rode till the other end before heading home by myself.

Now that I’ve tried the route out, I don’t think it is dangerous at all. I didn’t need to get on the road, there’s a bumpy pedestrian walkway for cyclists to use.

There are tough bits though.

From the top of the pedestrian bridge. Which way\'s home again?

After crossing over this highway via a walkway above it, I need to go all the way down, even into a pedestrian underpass under this highway via a steep flight of stairs.

I’m going to hit the Publish button now. If this post appears on my blog, I didn’t die!

What I Caught On Camera While Cycling Around The Hood

I suppose it is a good thing I haven’t managed to bring my bicycle to Singapore. Yesterday morning, I left the house at 6:30am to cycle around the hood. Before I had even clambered onto my bike, I saw this when I opened our front door:-

Looks like somebody’s been trying to steal our shoes! Funny that he took only one side of each pair though. Can you guess who the culprit is? Clue is in the one random fact about me post.

Dino wanted to join me for the ride but I wanted to cycle fast, wild, and free. I didn’t want to have any one chained to me! Sorry kiddo!

I thought I was early, but there’s always somebody much older and fitter who is earlier. See the uncle in the distance? He’s on his usual morning walk. -_-”

Born Freeeeeeee, as free as the wind blowssss!

Next I came to the padi field. Bet the Singaporeans haven’t seen real padi plants before. Just know how to eat the de-husked and polished white rice, sighz…

Ooh look who’s having fun splashing about in the padi field? Wouldn’t she look pretty in a pink ballerina’s tutu?

Wild flowers - this one’s a type of morning glory, a creeper plant. It reminds me of the poem, “Daffodils” even though these are not daffodils.

I WANDER’D lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

by William Wordsworth

Next, I stopped by my favorite tree in the hood for a pic. Ain’t it huge and grand? I don’t have a poem to go with this one unless you count “Billboard” as a poem…

I think that I shall never see
A billboard lovely as a tree.
Perhaps, unless the billboards fall,
I’ll never see a tree at all.

I can see my home between the dark trees. Almost back yet the light is still dusky. Obviously I haven’t cycled that far. Nope, not joining Le Tour de Langkawi yet.

Home! I peeked between the bars of the gate. Dino’s still waiting, good boy! I wheeled the gate open, cycled in, parked nicely, we embraced like long lost family. It’s nice to have a doggy. =)

Walking home, I bumped into Suzana. She’s made a big basket of nasi lemak (coconut rice) handwrapped in banana leaves and a bucket of condiments to go with it. There’s sambal tumis (a spicy sauce), sambal sotong (chili squid), rendang ayam (dry curry chicken in grated coconut). and ikan goreng (fried fish). It’s for my cousin’s lunch party because her groom’s family will be coming over with the dowry!

Help Me To Bring A Bicycle Across The Causeway

Country Outing by Rob BlackardMy old bicycle had given my mother many heart attacks. The first stunt I learned was to jump the bicycle across the longkang (drain) by going really fast then pulling up your handle bar just when you reach it.

Later, my neighbor taught me to cycle with 4 of us on one bicycle. She would be on the seat, her feet furiously paddling. I would be on the middle bar, my hands tightly gripped on the handle bar. Another neighbor would be riding pillion and the last one who is the youngest would be seated on the handle bar, their jobs are to pray we wouldn’t crash and die. Haha, thank goodness my mother didn’t see that.
Next I taught myself to cycle with my hands behind my back. “Look Ma, No Hands!” It was a fantastic way to learn body balancing but somehow, my mother refused to believe me when I explained.

One day, my beloved bicycle got stolen and my parents flatly refused to replace it. It was only about fifteen years later that my brother introduced me to a discounted dealer. Yesterday night, I brought a brand new bicycle home!

Now I have to figure out how to bring it across the causeway to Singapore and learn to balance a geek and a precious on it. Whee!
