A Trusted Friend is Your Best Tour Leader

Sometimes, I wish all of my friends blog. Over dinner, Suyin was sharing with me about her wild vacation in New York. Instead of having to figure out all the things to do in New York City by herself, she contacted an ex-classmate, Sarah Thai, who’s been living there for more than ten years. After that, Suyin’s entire holiday itinerary was taken care of.

Sarah brought her to eat and eat and eat and eat the most excellent food in the entire city. If Suyin had blogged the experience, I will be able to drool over the photos of the food even if I won’t be tasting the food in person.

Or may be not because then the temptation to visit Sarah might be irresistible.

If you don’t have a good friend like Sarah, Trusted Tours and Attractions provides discounted tickets to sightseeing tours in 23 cities across America. They are having a special promotion where you can win a $150 iTunes gift card by signing up for their newsletter. Catching up with an old school mate taught me that some things never change

The last time I saw SuYin was many many years and moons and stars ago. It felt so unreal to be sitting across the table from each other, we couldn’t stop snapping photos.

Then we reminisced about our schoolgirl days of telling tales and biting nails and having two of the “most huggable” bums in the history of Infant Jesus Convent.

The Biggest Bums in IJC

After all these years, we still have that one thing in common.

Where have all my classmates gone?

I’m meeting a friend from school days whom I haven’t seen since 1996. I will usually want to rub in a huge dollop of anti-wrinkle cream and flash some bling bling when meeting up with girls from school days, but not with SuYin.

Even after all these years, I feel as though I will be perfectly comfortable with her. I would have happily met her for a roti prata in shorts and cotton tee had we not decided to meet at City Hall where the green train line meets the red.

SuYin just came back from Tokyo where she visited Afiza. Siew Ming is in New York and SuYin met up with her too when she came back for a holiday. I haven’t caught up with any of them since 1996 and suddenly feels ashamed to have kept to myself.

Suddenly I feel like I want to fly to them and give every one a hug. Some other girls have gone to Munich, London, and other big cities. I want to see them and touch them again.

Since every one has flown so far away, do you think it will be crazy for me to live in every big city of the world for a year each? I’ll start with flights to India then go around the globe…

What’s a Geek Goddess doing on the roof of Esplanade?

The first time I met Estee aka Geek Goddess was at Mezza9 at Grand Hyatt. She’s intelligent, interesting, and interpersonally-skilled.

The second time I met her was on the roof of Esplanade.

What do you think she’s here to do?

Baby Xin Yi came to visit!

Yesterday, Nic’s sister came around with her hubby and her baby. All of a sudden, the adults in the house who are usually very serious and very busy with very important work started talking mushy baby talk, singing cheery baby songs and playing senseless baby games such as peekaboo.

I Need Advice on Social Skills

There are all sorts of people in this world, including the sort who bought a home for 600,000, but lies that he bought it for 1.1 million. Then there’s also the sort who buys a second hand car for 60,000 but lies that he bought it brand new for 150,000. Oh wait, they’re both the same person.

We’re seated for dinner. The waiter has poured the wine. I take the glass and admire the darkness of its color. Instead of the steak I’d ordered, I got served a big fat lie.

Should I continue to stare admiringly at my wine? Or should I look up and confront him?

May be this guy needs extra help with feeling secure about his finances. Or may be he is veiling a deeper secret - a need for debt management.

In Defense of Orphaning DK

Everyone knows adopting is complicated. I have read up about it and learned that one of the most important thing for a successful adoption is start Attachment Parenting.

When DK blogged that no one is adopting him any more, my heart went out to him. I wanted him to know he is worth more than money so I started saving up from that day. I also started the Attachment Parenting process back when I only had $2000 because I knew this will be the best for him.

I High-Fived him, bought him a Bandito. I helped him to know life will be better with me. Some attachment parenting advocates recommend breastfeeding to build the bond, but I wasn’t quite ready for that extreme.

Finally, I could afford to bring DK home on a beautiful sunny day. It was almost a miracle. But after I brought him home, he took one look at me, sent a cold “Hi Owner” message, and that was it.

I was crestfallen. I had looked forward to this day in ages. Over time, I discovered we were just not attaching. May be it was my fault that I didn’t go to the extremities in attachment parenting but our bond just did not grow. DK ignored me. There were no hugs, tickles or pokes.

With a heavy heart, I knew I had to let DK go in faith that he will find a better home. And he did.

Cosmetic Surgery

Long ago, the personal assistant to my CEO shared her breast reduction story. The heavy weight grieved her so much with severe back aches, the moment she was old enough and could afford to, she signed up for cosmetic surgery.

One major drawback from this procedure is that she will never be able to breastfeed, but she was so relieved to be free from back problems, she felt it was well worth the price.

Just today, I read about another girl who tenaciously waited six long years to be able to get a breast reduction surgery. As you can see, for some women it is the desperate pain that called for desperate measures.

Ashvinder Singh proposes to Harsimran Kaur - Day One of an Indian Wedding In Singapore

The days have been long as secondary school students throng Hong Kong Tat Kee Tailor to get themselves looking smart for the new school year. Despite the hectic hours, Nic and I made time to participate in the most classically elegant wedding we’ve ever seen.

For Ash and Simran, no expenses were spared. For the rest of us, I highly recommend reading how ANYONE Can Easily Save $10,000 on an average wedding…

Back to the topic. We received the printed in India wedding invitation back in November. The first night was the engagement/proposal at the Singapore Swimming Club.

This is the stage for performances. When I saw the blue and white theme, I was thrilled to bits as I love the color scheme. I was also glad that I wasn’t wearing blue as I’ve been a lot lately

Across the grand stage is a humbler version for the bride and groom to sit. Look at the glistening crystals dangling from the bouquets.

Beside the two stages, chairs were arranged for guests. Behind those rows of chairs were tables set for dinner. The center piece of each table had three long strands of peacock feathers! How befitting an Indian event.

Meanwhile, Ash was agitatedly waiting for his bride to arrive. Simran was nowhere to be seen. I felt his heart palpitating. Did she get the jitters and ran?

After lines of sweat had trailed down his forehead, Simran made her appearance. It was a grand entrance indeed.

She was escorted in by beautiful Indian women who held up a lace veil to protect her.

Ash knew that the way to Simran’s heart is through begging humility, so he got down on bended knee. Her heart was stolen straight away. She swiftly received the crimson rose from his hand.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is now official. Ashvinder Singh and Harsimran Kaur will soon be married!

After the proposal, siblings, cousins and best friends took turns to dance for the bride and groom. (Dance videos coming up, kay?) Before long, little tykes had clambered all over Ash and Simran’s laps to enjoy the best seats in the club.

Congratulations Ash & Simran. You have done well, both of you!
