Blogging 101

You have asked me to conduct a Blogging 101 course. Thank you for trusting me to share with you what I’ve learned. :)

I would like to start by sharing with you 7 simple steps to install a blog.

Note: For most bloggers, you won’t need to install your own blog. You can just sign up for a free blog at http://blogger.com or http://wordpress.com.

However, do bear in mind that every free provider provides services with terms and conditions attached. For example, one provider does not allow you to include any advertising. Violating the t & c may get your blog banned.

If you prefer not to depend on free services or would like to extend your blog to include more fun things:-

Let’s Get Started!

1. First, think of a short and sweet website address for your blog. This is called a domain name. An example of a domain name is precious-living.com :)

2. Next, sign up for webhosting. This is the part that will cost you money. I highly recommend that you sign up with Bluehost as this is the one I am using. I’ve found it to be real value as it is reliable, user-friendly and its technical support is always immediately available. Best of all, it is only US$6.95/month and you’ll get a domain name thrown in for free.

3. After you’ve signed up with Bluehost, you will be brought to your Bluehost Control Panel. All you will need to do is look for one icon and click it.

Scroll down until you see Software/Services. Click on the icon that says Simple Scripts.

4. You will now see a list of scripts that you can install. Look under Blogs and click on the script called Wordpress.

Note: You can use this to install a photo gallery, a forum, a shopping cart, and more on different pages of your website. For now we are just going to focus on installing a blog.

5. You will come to a page that shows you more information about Wordpress. Click on the green button at the bottom that says Install Now >

6. You will be taken to the Complete Installation page. Select the latest version of Wordpress (at this moment, it is 2.6). Select the domain name where you would like Wordpress to be installed. Tick every box. Finally, click the green button at the bottom that says Complete >

7. You will be asked if you are really sure you want to install this script. Ignore the warning and click the green button that says Yes, I’m Sure >

And in 7 simple steps, you’re done!

Now, you are ready to write your first blog post! Any questions, feel free to email me.
